When a shrink doesn't work....what does?

Some of my friends and acquaintances have inspired me to take up the topic of ‘people’ and study the human mind. When everything seems to be out of control, when your emotions seem to be controlling your actions and thoughts, what really could be the reason! When a shrink doesn’t work…..what does? No case is hopeless, we just need to know where exactly the problem lies. I did a bit of medico research on the structure of the human brain to understand the workings better. I would like to thank Dr. Kriti. Neuropsychologist (and a dear friend) who spoke to me for over two hours in this regard, explained to me about the functioning’s of the amygdala, the hippocampus, the neocortex, the prefrontal lobes etc which are basically responsible for our emotional surges and dampening, and would not want to name my subjects for privacy reasons.

In every real sense, we have two minds, one that thinks and the other that feels. The Rational mind is a mode of comprehension we are typically conscious of: more prominent in awareness, thoughtful, able to ponder and reflect. But alongside that there is another system of knowing: impulsive and powerful, if sometimes illogical – the Emotional mind. Emotional explosions are nothing but neural hijackings.

The Amygdala is an almond shaped cluster of interconnected structures perched over the brainstem, near the bottom of the limbic ring. This is a storehouse of emotional memory. When the amygdala gets active, people get emotionally hyperactive. If the amygdala is severed from the rest of the brain, the result is a striking inability to gauge the emotional significance of events, leading to ‘affective blindness’. The hippocampus and the neocortex are limbic structures that do most of the brain’s learning and remembering.

In the first few milliseconds of our perceiving something, we not only unconsciously comprehend what it is, but decide whether we like it or not. This impulse or cognitive unconsciousness, not only gives the identity but also an opinion about what we see or hear. Our emotions have a mind of their own, one which can hold views quite independently of our rational mind.

I remember from my electronics class in college about open and closed circuits. Similarly in the human brain, if the amygdala ‘proposes’ acting as an emergency emotional trigger, the left prefrontal lobe ‘disposes’ by switching off or atleast damping down all but the strongest negative surges of emotions.
The connections between the amygdala and the neocortex are the hub of co-operative treaties struck between head and heart, thought and feeling. This circuitry explains why emotion is so crucial in making wise decision. Working memory can only hold in mind the facts essential for completing a task, but strong emotions like anxiety and anger can create neural static, sabotaging the working memory. Feelings are typically indispensable for rational decisions; they point us in the proper direction, where dry logic can be of best use. The emotional brain is as involved in reasoning as is the thinking brain. The emotions then matter for rationality. Intellect cannot work at its best without emotional intelligence.

Emotional aptitude is a meta-ability determining how well we can use whatever other skills we have, including raw intellect. People who know how to manage their own feelings well, and who read and deal effectively with other people’s feelings are at an advantage in any domain of life, whether romance and intimate relationships or picking up the unspoken rules that govern success in organizational politics. People who cannot marshal control over their emotional life fight inner battles that sabotage their ability for focused work and clear thought. Delaying gratification and stifling impulsiveness underlies accomplishment of every sort. Empathy is the fundamental ‘people skill’ which kindles altruism.

Self-awareness means being ‘aware of both, our mood and our thoughts about that mood’. Confusion about feelings often leads to vague medical problems. In times of confusions, some people like to rely on their ‘gut feelings’. Gut feelings are nothing intuitive signals that guide us in the form of limbic-driven surges. It is a kind of an automatic alarm, typically calling attention to a potential danger from a given course of action, or an alert to an opportunity.

Chronic worry has all attributes of a low-grade emotional hijacking.
For the phobic, anxieties rivet on the feared situation;
For the obsessive, they fixate on preventing some feared calamity;
In panic attacks, the worries can focus on a fear of dying or on the prospect of having the attack itself.
Anxiety comes in two forms: cognitive or worrisome thoughts; somatic, the physiological symptoms of anxiety like sweating, racing heart or muscle tension. Insomniacs are troubled not because of somatic arousal but because of intrusive thoughts., and hence chronic worry becomes unbidden.

Healthy skepticism could act as a brake on the neural activation that underlies low-grade anxiety.
Bereavement is useful; full-blown depression is not. Melancholy- a subclinical depression is a range of despondency that people can handle if they have internal resources.
Powerful negative emotions twist attention toward their own preoccupations, interfering with the attempt to focus elsewhere. When emotions overwhelm concentration, what is being swamped is the ‘working memory’. Working memory is an executive function par excellence in mental life, making possible all other intellectual efforts. The prefrontal cortex is where feelings and emotions meet. When the limbic circuitry that converges on the prefrontal cortex is in the thrall of emotional distress, one cost is in the effectiveness of working memory: we can’t think straight. Psychopathy is one of the most perplexing emotional defects, where the victim is charming and completely without remorse for the most cruel acts.

The immune system is the ‘body’s brain’ defining the body’s own sense of self- of what belongs within and what does not. Immune cells travel in the blood stream throughout the entire body, contacting with virtually every other cell. Those cells they recognize, they leave alone; those they don’t, they attack. The attack either defends us against virus, bacteria and cancer or if immune cells misidentify some of the body’s own cells, creates an autoimmune disease such as allergy or lupus. The central nervous system and the immune system communicate. Cortisol, prolactin and the sorts are released during stress arousal, hampering the function of the immune cells, leading us to various diseases. If a depressed person is habitually depressed, he dies with a thousand complains with his life, little realizing that he created it all, and could have chosen to work against it.

Stress, anxiety, anger and melancholy can speed up the metasis of cancer; increase vulnerability to viral infections, plaque and blood clotting; can accelerate the onset of type1 and type2 diabetes; worsen or trigger asthma attack; can lead to ulceration of the gastrointestinal tract also causing inflammatory bowel disease. Stress also causes wear and tear to the memory. Depression also complicates recovery from bone fractures.

It is hence important to develop emotional skills for perfect functioning. This includes self-awareness, identifying expressing and managing feelings, impulse control and delaying gratification; and handling stress and anxiety.

The logic of the emotional mind is associative; it takes elements that symbolize a reality, or trigger a memory of it, to be the same as that reality. That is why similes, metaphors, and images speak directly to the emotional mind.
This logic of the heart-of the emotional mind, is like the logic of religion and poetry, psychosis and children, dream and myth. Dreams are private myths; myths are shared dreams.

Universe

“Universe” to me also means ‘onesong’ – uni_verse directly translates to one_song, where every note is in harmony, with itself and with one another, there are really no flaws. By ‘note’ I mean, one the ‘Form’ and other, the ‘Formless’

Every thing is energy. Nothing is solid. Everything vibrates at its own level of reality, and while form appears to be solid, a microscopic examination would reveal that the solid object is actually alive with dancing molecules vibrating at a little less than the speed of light and thus appearing us to be solid. Energy is the very stuff of the universe, and thoughts are a part of that ‘stuff’.
If time does not exist, then 1953 and 2010 are essentially the same thing. The future does not exist at all, what really does is the working unit of our lives, which is now. You cannot fail at being yourself. You can only produce results.

The invisible connection between all members of a species is more verifiable now than it was a few years ago. Physicists describe it as ‘phase transition’. Scientists report that when atoms within a molecule align in a certain way and a critical mass number is reached, the rest of the atoms spontaneously line up the same way. The entire history of the Human Being is filled with war and disorder. Do you support the divisions that have become a part of this being’s history, or can you be one voice affecting the voice next to you and so on, until we reach that critical mass where the entire being will align itself with the harmony that is the onesong? Regardless of where any of us is on this globe, given a world that is round, it is impossible to choose up sides. Each of us can make a difference in how the totality proceeds and exists.

There are 3 levels of consciousness: Dreaming consciousness, Waking consciousness and a higher level of consciousness. We are convinced that the body is real, yet everything that we experience in the dream is entirely in the realm of thought. There is no physical reality, it is an illusion, we realize when we awaken. We spend approx a third of our lives sleeping and a large percentage of our sleep time in dream activity that is pure formless thought which seems very real before we awaken. What is a nocturnal emission? nothing but the ejaculation of the protoplasm of life. Pure thought creating the opportunity for the dance of life. Quite an amazing process in the fabulously mysterious world of pure formlessness, of thought. As Thoreau said
“Our truest life is when we are in our dreams awake” – we are waking dreamers!

Thoughts cannot be broken up into neat little compartments. Only the tiniest aspect of us is ‘form’. The secret lies in an attempt to think globally and act locally. This is what the healing process is all about.
Really, the journey and the goal are the same! We are never going to be formed. We will never reach an ultimate goal. Life is transition and growth. Paradoxically, we can realize all our goals in this perspective of oneness.
Since the major part of our living is in the astral dimension of thought, things are of no use in this state of formlessness. Just as nothing in our universe is ever formed, neither are ‘we’.

Everything that we are against, blocks us from abundance. If we are against terrorism and war, we become a part of the problem. The solution lies in not being ‘against terrorism’ but ‘for peace’. We are a duality of form and formlessness. In essence we can never own anyone or anything, so the easier we can ‘let go’, fewer are the obstacles for our life journey. The ability to be detached from all things and people and yet see ourselves as a part of the whole humanity is one of the greatest paradoxes of the spiritual journey.
When we are not trying to win, but just allowing the action to flow totally in the moment, making our contest more like our meditation, we emerge winners in harmony with our body n mind. This is another paradox. If we think about winning and are attached to it, we lower our ability to function at the level that winning demands. This happens because an attachment to winning almost always goes hand in hand with a need to ‘Fight’ our opponents. Ultimately fighting weakens, while harmony strengthens and empowers. As we transcend attachments we learn to shift our consciousness to networking, giving power away and we discover the metaphysical luxury of living peacefully and productively.

There is some kind of mysterious connection that exists between our thoughts and the neuromuscular activity of our bodies. When we dance, why do our feet move perfectly in response to a thought which tells them to move? What is this...a connection?
Mental energy directs muscular energy. Mental energy is thought. Therefore thought is some kind of a connection between a desire and a physical outcome. I accept this automatic stimulus-response connection as a way of life and believe that there is a connection between the formless and the world of form.

Now this makes me ponder more. What is memory? Memory is nothing more than thoughts. So where are those dimensionless thoughts stored, in order for us to recall them? People believe that memory is stored in the brain, yet the brain is a container the size of a grapefruit. It is form. Can you store thoughts, which are formless, in a container which is form? Ofcourse not. So what is memory and where is it if it is not stored in the brain?
Experiencing our universal spirituality requires entering another dimension of being, where beginnings, endings and storage places are unnecessary. In some eastern traditions, this higher dimension is called Tao, which translates to ‘the unfolding’. It has been said that ‘the Tao that is described, is not the Tao’. This is because form, in words, whether spoken or written, describes the experience.
If memory (thoughts) cannot be stored in our brain, then we have to be open to the possibility that they are outside the brain in some way. The mysterious happenings that seem so inexplicable are nothing but thoughts meeting thoughts. If there are invisible connections between thoughts and form, then why not between thoughts and thoughts as well? And if thoughts do indeed meet with other thoughts, and we are the source of thoughts, then it seems possible that we create synchronistic situations - ‘Coincidence’.
Synchronicity is not a passive speculative principle. It is here, it works, and we are a part of it. Believe it or not, see it or not. We do not need a formula to tell us that there is a connection between thought and everything that we do. This amorphous formless stuff called thought is out there and in there at the same time. It is everywhere.
Energy? Perhaps.
A resonance? Perhaps.
A chain link of morphogenetic fields? Perhaps.
Invisible? Definitely!
Something from which we can never escape? Definitely!
Just try ‘not thinking’ for some minutes and you will see that thought is something that you are inextricably tied in to.

Nothing is random. Even electrons, supposedly the paragons of unpredictability, are tame and obsequious little creatures that rush around at the speed of light, going precisely where they are supposed to go. Yet there is a wonderful anarchy of free will. If nothing is random, how can there be free will? Well nothing is predetermined; it is determined, or was determined, or will be determined. Time however can be easily overcome; not by chasing the light, but by standing back far enough to see it all at once. The universe is still and complete. Subatomic particles seem to know instantaneously what decisions are made elsewhere, which can be as far away as another galaxy. All the things in our universe (including us) that appear to exist independently are actually parts of one all-encompassing organic pattern.
For a particle here to know what is going on over there, while it is happening,, it must be over there. If over there, it cannot be here. If at both places at once, then it is no longer a particle. This means that particles are related with other particles in a systematic and intimate way that coincides with our definition of organic.

There are certain principles working within us to keep us alive and functioning, such as salivation, digestion, elimination etc. so also principles of abundance, synchronicity, detachment and oneness are operative in the universe. All we have to do is to tune in to them and let them work through us. Since we are energy, and everything else in the universe is also energy, all we have to do is keep it flowing with out blockages. When you send it out, it will keep coming back.

Get real. It doesn’t work – the Zero denomination Note

It is commonly said that doing something about a problem is better than sitting on your hands and doing nothing. This is not entirely correct. For, by doing something, while you may feel better for doing something, you may not be really helping the situation. You may at best dilute your attention from the root cause and at worst exasperate the problem, if what you are doing is not apt. Zero rupee note is this category. To put it simply, it is not a very effective idea.
As the novelty wears off - it will have zero impact and will lead to making the situation worse for the individual on the spot

According to Mr. Vijay Anand, president of “5TH PILLAR”, a local NGO, which distributes zero denomination notes as a unique initiative to mobilize citizens to fight corruption, this concept would work for the following reasons:
First, bribery is a crime in India punishable with jail time. Corrupt officials seldom encounter resistance by ordinary people that they become scared when people have the courage to show their zero rupee notes, effectively making a strong statement condemning bribery. Anand believes that the success of the notes lies in the willingness of the people to use them. People are willing to stand up against the practice that has become so commonplace because they are no longer afraid: first, they have nothing to lose, and secondly, they know that this initiative is being backed up by an organization—that is, they are not alone in this fight.

Personally, I don’t think this works, esp. with people like Mayawati and Yedurappa (two to mention) who are occupying very important posts in U.P n Karnataka resp. They are the source, or the start point where bribery/corruption begins, and slowly trickles down the entire system through corrupt bureaucrats, who are willing to bribe as much as 3 crores, for the head posts in various departments. Irrespective of their position in the sense of seniority/juniority, academic and professional credits, they are not only being considered but also promoted, putting to shame law n order, justice and equity, denying the most worthy n ‘fit’ his rights.

While the idea of the zero rupee note is commendable, it looks in the wrong direction.
India's pervasive corruption is more a function of the self serving sluggishness of the ruling class - the recently exposed Ruchika Girhotra case and my own experiences indicate that checks and balances have collapsed and coalesced into one corrupt predatory ruling class. There is very little difference between the judiciary, the administration, the legislature and the press. They all know that bad, perverse, dysfunctional behaviour is the capital with which to earn money and power. The old "Pinch the child and then rock the cradle" idea.
My fear is despite the fantastic growth figures, India is fast deteriorating into an administrative nightmare and a bit of a basket case. Transparency and accountability are the mantras that will create the necessary paradigm shift.
The RTI ACT 2005 as a piece of legislation is brilliant.
But count on the bureaucrats to racketeer on this too.

The problem of corruption is a deep rooted one and not specific to a country, culture or era. One has to look at history to see what type of efforts have been more successful than others in fighting corruption. The notable examples come from Singapore, which suffered quite badly due to corruption at one point. One of the factors that helped reduce it significantly was the very substantial increase in the salaries of civil servants, along with the fear of physical punishment. Singapore is a place where public flogging for severe offenses is a strong deterrent for variety of offenses against the law.
While this is not being suggested as a recipe for anti-corruption magic formula, it does offer some food for thought in how societies have fought corruption. Only organized and well coordinated efforts, applied over a sustained period, and supported with the political will can make a difference.

The pillars for these efforts have to be
a) braking the nexus of criminals with politicians, with election reform,
b) use of technology to facilitate routine requests of citizens and reporting corruption,
c) increasing the deterrence factor by severe and quick reprisals.
d) improved awareness among the citizens of their rights and responsibilities.
Without such multi-pronged approach, individuals are just as poorly equipped for the fight as the Satyagrahis were to fight the British soldiers.
Placing the major burden of this fight on the individual, without organized support is foolhardy and ineffective. The 60 years of Indian history is the proof.

The US and other countries officially endorse tipping for service. The Zero denomination note could say something like: "If you don't get paid enough, take it up with your manager, not me."
What gave them that right? Their expectation? My generosity? A contract? Social norms? God? The government? Speaking of the government, if the waiter works at a government cafeteria, does that make it bribing a government employee?

Find yourself, and BE….

If you can’t be a pine on the top of a hill,
Be a scrub in the valley – but be
The best little scrub by the side of the rill;
Be a bush, if you can’t be a tree.
If you can’t be a bush, be a bit of the grass,
And some highway happier make;
If you can’t be a muskie, then just be a bass –
But the liveliest bass in the lake!
If you can’t be a highway, then just be a trail,
If you can’t be the sun, be a star;
It isn’t by size that you win or you fail –
Be the best of whatever you are!
Envy is Ignorance, but Imitation is Suicide!!!

One Christmas I’ll always remember…..

Every year Christmas has meant either a get together with family and friends where we decorate a small tree, prepare something special to eat, play secret Santa for an entire week just before Christmas and party with friends at night, or attend an authentic Christmas lunch or dinner with family and friends and party later on. Christmas like every festival has always spelt joy and happiness……..25th dec 2009, is one Christmas I will always cherish. More so because I felt a different kind of joy altogether….”joy of giving”

My friends had been asking me “what are we doing Ash?”, “Decide fast, or we wont get passes/tickets etc.”, “Ash when will you decide? We need to sign the guest list”, “Catholic club?Athenas?13th floor?fuga?blah blah blah??” someone even wanted to go to Goa! I somehow did not feel like partying this year esp. on Christmas for some strange voice from within that was saying something else which I kept vaguely listening to until the 24th. I was unable to understand my reluctance, and low enthusiasm to be with friends. I meditated for a bit and knew what I was doing the next day.

With three large bags of gifts, I entered “Sumedha little home”, an orphanage supported by “Helpline Charitable Trust”, where I met so many angels, little ones, running around a very beautifully decorated Christmas tree. First hurting thing that I noticed was that 85% of them were girls. It’s so sad how “she” is thrown away the minute she is born. As I placed my gifts near the tree, I felt the first whiff of “joy”

I met a Danish guy Paul, who works for “Danish Indian Children” who is in Blr for ten days, and would be going to Calcutta and then Chennai before returning. This was my second whiff of “joy”, to see how far people travel to help, how much someone can give to see a smile on someone else’s face. This was very inspiring. If this was his mission, his purpose of this life, I’m so happy I met someone like him who is doing it with such honesty.

We played a lot of games like passing the parcel, musical chair (which I won ;)), Chinese knot, memory and many more with those angels, before cutting a ten kilo black forest cake sponsored by Paul. I personally interacted with few of them, to really understand what they felt and what they desired. They are just like us. You and me, only a lot more mature and independent. Some were very angry with life (I can understand why), others were dreaming of great careers. I felt that they were really well behaved and well trained with how to speak, how to eat, how to generally behave in public, and be disciplined.

It was amazing to hear them converse in Hindi, English and Kannad. They are being educated. It’s sad but true that kids HAVE to grow up when their parents leave them…at WHATEVER age!

I loved all kids there, but I specially liked Gautam, a four year boy, who was shy, and very quiet. I noticed that he kept staring at my box of “munch” I had won in the musical chair game, but refused to take it when I offered. I offered and failed, I coaxed and failed. He kept shyly nodding a “no thank you”, until I requested “will you please share my chocs?” and he got off his chair and took my box with both his little hands (this was when I felt “joy” again) and opened it, only to take two! What self respect. I was impressed. I did not coax him to take more. Maybe i could understand how he might have felt. Sympathy was the last thing I wanted him to think I felt for him.

We sang a lot of songs, carols etc. then began opening the gifts. It was such a wonderful feeling to watch them all so excited YET behaving themselves. They loved everything they received, unlike few of us who can only crib. We must learn from these kids, they truly understand the essence of life, and I salute the ones who are teaching them and educating them rightly.

Dinner was arranged by the same NGO. I contributed a cheque from my side and bid them goodbye, when Paul asked me if I’d be interested in more of such things. I signed up with his organization.

I did not go to a glam/ happening party this Christmas, but I’m feeling so blessed tonight :) , and pray for a very bright future for Our future. I would typically pen this experience in my personal diary, but I thought it would really be nice to share it with everyone. Thank you for reading.

The Princess and the CRAZY FROG.

This is one of my crazy stories i spun in 5 seconds on demand......... i was given the characters...

Once upon a time in the land of mushrooms lived a great great king, who had a wonderful lil princess named blossoms.Blossoms had everything in the world she wanted, except friends to play with.Tired of the maids n daasis she often would wander into the gardens.
One such lovely evening as the princess was playin near the pondin their garden, she saw Friggy!!!!!..a crazy lil frog without underwear!!!
blossoms : "aaaaaaaaaaaahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh!!!"
friggy : "what??!!!!!??"
blossoms : "u arrogant lil frog..where are your jockeys??"
friggy : "err..are'nt u worried about how a frog could speak??"
blossoms : "yyyeeeeaaa....how can a frog speak?im NOT speakin to an ugly frog who does not wear his underwear"
friggy : "err..okies..bye!!:)"and friggy disappears.Blossoms gets very angry at his arrogance and runs to the king."pahpaah!!! there is an ugly lil arrogant frog in our kingdom.Throw him out puhleeezee pahpaah!!".The king ent his men in search of that frog who troubled his angel..but in vain. His men came back disappointing the king and his princess. She would walk around the garden waiting for friggy to appear as secretly she had developed a liking for friggy.Days rolled by n friggy did not come again.Soon she forgot everything and got busy with her life.
Another such lovely evening, as the princess was strollin in her garden, she said aloud "wish i could meet that frog again.." n she heard a voice : "are you sure you want to see me??blossoms : "aaaaaaaaaaaaahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh!!!!!who is this??"
friggy : "oho.. tum cheekhti bahot ho.its me friggy.you sent your guards to catch me"
blossoms : "i wanna talk to you once..no guards around"friggy appears from somewhere.
blossoms : "HOW DARE YOU!!!!why on earth dont you wear your jocks?u offend me."
Friggy : "pardon me oh princess, but i live in this pond which happens to be in your kingdom.im not your slave.:)"
blossoms : "YOU!!!!!!!..i will not kiss n turn you into a handsome prince..u may stay that way..an ugly frog all your life!"
friggy : "oh..that?? haha.. that used to happen at my greatgrandfathers' times..it does not work that way anymore."
blossoms : "fine.. im not ever talkin to u"
friggy : "ok.. bye!!:)"and friggy went away. Now the princess was so upset that she got the pond dried and felt happy with her achievement.Years later..now blossoms had grown up,n the king was looking for suitable alliances for her.It sure was tough to win her hand as it involved 4 tasks of battling the tigers, then the crocodiles, then the wild beasts n then the royal chess players.Every prince that came by,ran away for his life.
One fine day,a handsome young talented prince came by,n expressed his interest in marrying the princess. He was so brave and intelligent that he came out a winner very easily at every stage. The king was soooper impressed n immediately said "YES":)
The princess was watchin all of this from her chamber n announced on her royal mic." papaah.. i would like to meet this young man".
Before the king could say anything, the prince said "exactly the moment i've been waiting for."As the prince walked into her chamber, there was a screen in front,n he could not see beyond that screen. The princess was in her royal bath, with her maids helping.
princess : "why do you so badly want to marry me?"
prince : "because i have fallen in love with you..you gave me this life".Blossoms is all confused...before she could say anything,
prince : "by the way,...its nice to see YOU in water for a change...;)"and the prince went away. The princess was shocked.
Later as she lay in her bed at night, she kept thinking about that prince..."how dare he... how could he come in and speak like that... he irritated me just like...justlike...that stupid frog!!!!" Thud!!!!...n the prince entered through the window
blossoms : "aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh!!!"
prince : "ohooo.... why do you ALWAYS scream so much???"
blossoms : "how dare uuuuuu!!!!!
prince : "are you not worried about how i climbed this castle?it was such a task scaling the walls .. but i did it for you only for you!"
S....I....L....E....N....C....E....!!!!
blossoms : "no this cant be true"
the prince was smiling..
blossoms : "no.. this really cnt be true... i did not kiss you"
prince : " oh i told you...it din't work that way anymore...:)"They kept looking at each other..The prince then went down on his knees n said "blossoms.. i love you.. very much..much more than you can imagine.will you marry me??"And the princess had tears in her eyes..she was touched like never before. She went straight into his arms and said "you truly are my prince!!"They lived happily ever after.:)

boy... was i glad i put an end to this crazy thing i started!!!! hahahahahahah
